The insertion loss specification of an MTP trunk cable connector — typically expressed as a maximum value in decibels — is the most important optical performance parameter to evaluate. More important than the specification is whether the supplier provides per-connector test data for every cable shipped, confirming that each connector meets the specified limit. Be particularly cautious of very low-priced products where the fibre specification cannot be verified through supplier documentation. The mechanical quality of an MTP trunk cable — the construction of the cable jacket, the strength members, the furcation tubing at each end, and the connector body assembly — affects long-term reliability in installation and operation. Well-constructed cables tolerate the handling stresses of installation without fibre displacement or connector damage. Poorly constructed cables may show problems immediately on installation or, more insidiously, fail gradually over time as cumulative handling stress takes its toll.

Ask suppliers for details of their cable construction — jacket material, strength member type, furcation tube length and material — and compare these against the requirements of the installation environment. Cables installed in outdoor or harsh indoor environments have more demanding mechanical requirements than those in controlled equipment room conditions.

Lead Times, Stock Availability, and Support

MTP trunk cables are manufactured to order in specific lengths and specifications. The lead time from order to delivery — which can range from a few days for stocked standard lengths to several weeks for custom specifications — needs to align with the project schedule. Suppliers with stock programmes for common lengths and specifications offer more flexibility for time-sensitive projects than those who manufacture entirely to order.

Beyond the product itself, the quality of a supplier’s technical support — their ability to help with polarity planning, loss budget calculations, compatibility verification, and troubleshooting — adds significant value for complex projects. A supplier who is a genuine technical partner, not just a product fulfilment service, is particularly valuable for first-time MTP trunk cable deployments or for projects with unusual requirements.
